Hugo Gernsback published a plethora of pulp magazines back in the 1940's and 1950's, each with a kitschy illustration on the cover. I've always been a huge fan of retro visions of the future. I wanted to capture that in this illustration.
This was inspired by a cheesy 1950's postcard of a couple sitting on a rubber lawn mat and enjoying the sun. I thought it would be cute to have an evil sci-fi couple doing the same thing. Originally I wanted there to be a red glow cast over them, as they were supposed to be watching nuclear bombs going off in the distance. Unfortunately I hadn't yet figured out enough coloring techniques to realize that.
